Alasdair Allan hails from near Selkirk in the Borders. He joined the SNP in 1991 and was involved in student politics at both Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities. He graduated with an MA (Hons) in Scottish Language and Literature from Glasgow and a PhD in Scots Language from Aberdeen. While studying at Aberdeen, he worked as a teaching assistant in the English department, before taking up work with SNP Headquarters, and then at the Scottish Parliament. He then worked for a Glasgow based charity.
Alasdair was the SNP’s Westminster candidate in Aberdeen North in 2001 and Scottish Parliamentary Candidate in Gordon in 2003. He was elected the Party’s National Secretary in 2003. In 2007 Dr Allan was elected to the Scottish Parliament for the constituenty of The Western Isles.
